Natuurlijk start ik met mijn eigen leuke stadje, Arnhem! Helaas is de stad zijn gezelligheid even kwijt door alle maatregelen, maar zodra het weer kan is een bezoek de moeite waard en zeker de hieronder genoemde plekjes.
Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean..cake!
Mams: met een grote vitrine vol lekkers en een uitgebreid assortiment aan koffietjes wordt het moeilijk kiezen, maar als je uiteindelijk je keuze hebt gemaakt kun je heerlijk onderuit zakken in een van de fijne leren stoeltjes of op de bank. Ook is het hier heerlijk werken met zelfs een speciale ruimte boven, maar stiekem blijft een plekje bij het raam ook heel fijn. Ik kom hier heel graag met mijn mams!
Hoek: zoals de naam al zegt zit dit leuke tentje op de hoek. En wel recht tegenover Centraal Station, wat heel fijn neerploffen is na een treinreisje. Aanrader hier zijn zeker de macarons, maar ook de overige lekkernijen zijn moeilijk te weerstaan. En ze hebben zelfs een leuk plekje voor je Instaperfect shot (zie foto hieronder)!
Babo: een begrip in Arnhem en ik heb hier veel gezellige avondjes meegemaakt. Maar overdag voor een koffie met gebak is dit ook een heel fijn plekje. Al raad ik je eigenlijk aan hun homemade Chai Latte te proberen, deze is echt de beste die ik ooit heb gehad! (zegt dit Starbucksloving meisje). Oh en die grote punt Merinque taart is ook heel fijn om te delen.
Hemels: de naam zegt het al, hier vind je hemelse gebakjes en chocolade, die je ook voor thuis kan bestellen. Of begin de dag goed met een heerlijk ontbijtje in dit leuke tentje in de 7 straatjes.
Beste broodjes:
Vegan: het beste vegan broodje in Arnhem scoor je bij FirstEet, de Vegan Chicken Curry met mangochutney. Eerlijk, je heb niet eens door dat het vegan is, je eet gewoon een heerlijk broodje op een heel fijn plekje in Arnhem. De mooie inrichting waar je ook nog eens kunt snuffelen voor leuke cadeautjes (ja ook mijn boek is hier te krijgen) en de superlieve eigenaren maakt dat je graag terug komt. En in de zomer zeker want naast heerlijke ontbijtjes, lunchbroodjes en vegan gebakjes maken ze dan hun eigen popsicles in de meeste verrassende smaakjes (die je ook nog eens kan laten versieren, waardoor ze niet alleen heerlijk zijn, maar ook nog eens Insta perfect)! (zie foto)
Italiaans: verscholen in 1 van de vele steegjes in Arnhem, zit Woarst. Als je eenmaal een broodje hier hebt gehaald, weet je dit steegje erna feilloos te vinden. Ik ga eigenlijk altijd voor de Caprese, maar hun paradepaardje is de Porchetta. Onlangs heeft iemand mij overgehaald deze eens te proberen (varkensvlees is meestal niet mijn eerste keuze), en eerlijk…ik heb een nieuwe favoriet!
Tosti: het is even een wandelingetje maar als je over de Rijnkade doorwandelt naar de Havenmeester dan wordt je wel beloont met de lekkerste tosti van Arnhem (volgens mij dan!). Ik raad de Bacon Cheddar aan! (klein waarschuwing: ze hebben geen toilet!)
Falafel: in mijn eigen straatje zit toch wel de lekkerste Falafel tent van Arnhem, Mitano. Met verse ingrediënten stel je hier zelf je wrap samen. (Overigens ook lekker gevuld met Kebab). Lekker makkelijk om onderweg te eten terwijl je door de leukste straat van Arnhem wandelt of bij mooi weer op hun terrasje…en wie weet zie je mij nog voorbij lopen 😉
Surinaams: hier kan ik niet kiezen dus noem ik ze gewoon allebei. Faffie in mijn eigen straatje (Steenstraat) en Tante Roos in Klarendal (modekwartier). Vooral een broodje Pom is bij allebei een aanrader!
To do:
Glazen lift: helaas niet de glazen lift van het kinderboek, deze lift hoort bij de Eusebiuskerk van Arnhem en niet bij Willy Wonka’s chocolade fabriek. Maar als je een mooi uitzicht over de stad zoekt dan is dit wel echt het plekje. Ga met de glazen lift naar boven, wat al een beleving op zich is want je komt langs de klokken en eenmaal boven kun je kiezen uit twee glazen balkons waardoor je eigenlijk over heel Arnhem kunt kijken. Je kunt kiezen om een audio tour te doen en zo meer te weten te komen over Arnhem, maar ook zonder is het uitzicht indrukwekkend. En spot jij de Disney figuren die op de kerk zijn gemaakt tijdens de restauratie in 1962? Entree €11,- (met museumkaart krijg je €1 korting) en je kunt een tijdslot reserveren.
Sonsbeekpark: mijn favoriet plek om even mijn hoofd leeg te maken, lekker te wandelen maar ook heerlijk om in de zomer te liggen op het grote veld voor de Witte Villa (haal wat lekkers to go in de stad of neem zelf wat mee om te picknicken, en ja, bbq is ook toegestaan…wel graag alles netjes opruimen in mijn parkje ;)!!). Het park heeft ook genoeg plekjes om op het terras te zitten of een koffie to go mee te nemen. En met een kleine doorsteek loop je zo Park Zypendaal in, wat net iets rustiger is.
Burger’s Zoo: of dieren wel of niet in hokken horen, aan die discussie ga ik mij niet wagen. Wat ik wel een fijne gedachte vindt, is dat Burger’s Zoo al zo’n 30 jaar een groot natuurgebied in Belize beschermen. En dit gebied hebben ze in hun Mangrove weer nagebootst, en eerlijk, dit is mijn favoriete plekje in de dierentuin. Je waant je gelijk op een tropisch eiland, omringd door honderden vlinders en hun nieuwste aanwinst is hier ook te bekijken, de baby zeekoe! Maar ook de Bush, Dessert en Ocean zijn zeker een bezoek waard. Entree €24,50.
Openlucht museum: hahaa eerlijk, dit vond ik vroeger echt het sufste uitje en het enige waar ik een beetje blij van werd, waren de poffertjes en het oud-Hollands snoepwinkeltje. Inmiddels ben ik wat ouder en kan ik het iets meer waarderen, vooral in de winter met de ijsbaan, de Amsterdamse huisjes, het jaren 70 huis (oh kijk die lamp hadden we vroeger ook, en die stoel, oh en die bielzen in de tuin ;)!) en ja ook nog steeds het oud-Hollands snoep winkeltje. Entree €19,50.
Airborne Museum: geschiedenisfans kunnen hun hart ophalen in Arnhem, we staan immers bekend om de brug te ver en overal in Arnhem vind je wel verwijzingen naar de Tweede Wereldoorlog. En al ligt het Airborne museum eigenlijk in Oosterbeek, het is zeker een bezoekje waard als je meer wilt weten over de slag om Arnhem. En in de kelder beleef je zelfs hoe dat er toentertijd aan toe ging. Entree: €15.
Staying for dinner?
FoodVia: wil je weten wat voor een lekkers Arnhem en omgeving te bieden heeft, dan moet je zeker even aanschuiven bij FoodVia. Hier koken ze met alleen maar lokale producten en met het No Food Waste concept. Wat verrassende combinaties oplevert. En hoe leuk, een paar keer per jaar kun je hier dus aan de lange tafel aanschuiven om samen met vreemden te genieten van een lekker diner. FoodVia staat voor verbinding en dat maakt dit een fijne plek voor een gezond “wat de pot schaft” etentje!
Foodhallen: hahaha dit meisje was een beetje skeptisch, Arnhem moet ook weer eens hip mee doen. Zo erg zelfs dat mijn ouders er nog eerder geweest waren dan ik en zo lovend waren dat ik wel een kijkje moest nemen. Oh boy, was i wrong, dit is echt zo’n leuk versie van een Foodhall. Ben zelfs een beetje trots dat we (nouja ik niet, maar Arnhemmers die het snappen) zoiets geweldigs neer hebben gezet. De inrichting, sfeer en food aanbod is echt zo nice. Als het weer mag, moet je hier gewoon heen en je kan er zelfs in het weekend een dansje wagen zodra de keukens sluiten. (zie foto’s)
Matsuzaka: er ging een tijdje een meme rond met Oprah “you get a sushi restaurant, and you get a sushirestaurant” over Arnhem en eerlijk ze popte toen ook op als paddenstoelen in de herfst. Maar Matsuzaka zat er al die tijd al, ver voor sushi hip werd. En tot vandaag vind ik dit nog steeds de lekkerste. Geen all you can eat concept maar lekkere vers gemaakte sushi, je ziet het gemaakt worden voor je ogen. En stiekem ben ik heel erg jaloers op hun gouden behang. Ook af te halen. (de sushi, niet het behang ;)…jammergenoeg!).
Konijnenvoer: sinds 2018 zat dit beroemde (en awardwinning) plantbased restaurant in Arnhem tot ze vorig jaar hun deuren sloten. Shame on me, want ik ben er dus nooit geweest, dit was zo’n restaurant wat nog op mijn lijstje stond, maar helaas…gemiste kans! Of toch niet? Want er gaan geruchten dat de eigenaren op zoek zijn naar een nieuwe locatie voor Konijnenvoer 2.0 (of zelf 3.0). Tot die tijd kunnen we gelukkig genieten van hun To Go/Take out optie, Konijnenvoer Express en deze heb ik toch maar even snel getest voor ik deze blog online gooide. (als in, gisteravond!). Conclusie: JA DIT WIL JE!!!!!! Vegan heeft nog nooit zo lekker gesmaakt!
Locals: helaas is dit nieuwe restaurant geopend terwijl Rutte besloot alles weer dicht te gooien, dus nee, ik heb het nog niet kunnen proberen zoals vele in Arnhem. Maar de website beloofd veel goeds qua inrichting en menu. Ze hanteren het 80/20 principe dus groente staat in de spotlight en die groente groeit dus gewoon in het restaurant. Maar voor de vlees en viseters staat er ook genoeg lekkers op de kaart. En ook dat komt uit de buurt. Ik ben in ieder geval heel benieuwd!
Voulez vous coucher*:
Not avec moi, ondanks dat het mijn stadje is, maar gelukkig hebben we genoeg andere leuke slaapplekjes.
Hotel Haarhuis: niet “on a budget” maar wel heel fijn en centraal. Stap vanuit trein zo je kamer in…zo dicht zit dit hotel bij het mooie Centraal Station (wat ook erg Instagram-waardig is trouwens). Hier vind je een paar eerder genoemde leuke plekjes in 1 gebouw: restaurant Locals en koffietentje Hoek is van Hotel Haarhuis en ze hebben ook een geweldige rooftopbar, Blou, met prachtig uitzicht over de stad. Oh en check ook vooral even de award winning wc van de bar ;)!
Hotel ModeZ: Gek op mode & design? Dan “moet” je echt een nachtje blijven slapen in dit hotel, met kamers ingericht door o.a. Bas Kosters en The People of the Labyrinths, gelegen midden in het Modekwartier. Overigens is Caspar, onder het hotel, ook echt een fijn plekje voor een koffietje of lekkere lunch. Aanrader voor foodies: bij Studio Lenneke Wispelwey in het Modekwartier vind je echt prachtig servies!
Landgoed Groot Warnsborn: liever genieten van de rust op de Veluwe, dan is hotel Groot Warnsborn een aanrader. Heerlijk om over het landgoed te wandelen, maar ook het restaurant is een aanrader.
*omdat ik natuurlijk gewoon in mijn eigen bedje slaap, heb ik niet veel ervaringen met hotels of B&B’s in Arnhem. Ik denk dat er vast ook budgetvriendelijkere opties zijn, zo zag ik online veel B&B’s in leuke wijken dicht bij het centrum dus google deze vooral.
Snack souvenirs:
Arnhemse Meisjes: zoet met een vleugje zout, dit koekje beschrijft perfect het Arnhemse meisje!
Chocolade van Mousset: een begrip in Arnhem en omgeving en ze verkopen ook de Arnhemse meisjes! Maar eigenlijk kun je niet vertrekken zonder de chocolade, er zijn mensen (en ik noem geen namen) die vroeger niet voor minder gingen als het ging om chocoladeletters of paashazen. Oh en mocht je net na sinterklaas in Arnhem zijn, sluit dan aan in de rij voor Brokkendag, het beste No Food Waste concept ever!
Arnhemse Korenmarkt likeur: te koop bij Barrique, de echte Arnhemse slijter naast de Korenmarkt. Ook hebben ze geweldige waterkannen voor Ernem’s water bij de wijn. Oh en voor Arnhems bier of een bijzonder (niet Arnhemse) Whiskey ben je hier ook aan het goede adres!

Ofcourse i start in my own little cute city, Arnhem! Unfortunately due to the restrictions it has lost it’s warmth a bit, but as soon as it’s “back to normal”, it’s worth a visit and especially the below mentioned places.
Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean..cake!
Mams: with a showcase full of deliciousness and a big assortment of coffees it will be hard to choose, but when you finally do, cozy up in one of their leather seats or on the couch. This is also a nice spot to work at, they even have a special place for it upstairs but secretly a windowspot is nicer. I really like to visit it with my own mams (mum in Dutch)!
Hoek: as the name already suggest (in Dutch it means corner) this cute spot is located on the corner. And more specific, just across Central Station, which makes it lovely to take a seat after a long train ride. Recommended are definetly their macarons, but the other sweets are also hard to resist. And they even have a nice spot for your Instaperfect shot (see photo below)!
Babo: well known in Arhem and i have had a lot of fun nights here. But during the day it’s also a very nice place for coffee and cake. Although i actually recommend to try their homemade Chai Latte, it’s really the best i ever had (coming from this Starbucksloving girl). Oh and that big piece of Merinque pie is also nice to share.
Hemels: the name (Heaven in Dutch) already says enough, you can find heavenly cakes and chocolates here, that you can also order to take home. Or start your day right with a delicious breakfast in this cute spot in one of the 7th streets.
Best sandwich:
Vegan: you score the best vegan sandwich in Arnhem at FirstEet, the Vegan Chicken Curry with mangochutney.
Honestly, you don’t even notice it’s vegan, you just eat a delicious sandwich in a very cozy place in Arnhem. The gorgeous interior where you can also shop for cute presents (yes they also sell my book) and the supersweet owners make you want to come back. And definetly in the Summer, as besides delicious breakfasts, lunch sandwiches and vegan pastry they than make their own popsicles in the most suprising flavours (which you can also decorate, which not only makes them delicious, but also Insta Perfect)! (see photo).
Italian: hidden in one of the many alleys of Arnhem you find Woarst. Once you had their sandwich, you will be able to find back the alley without a problem. I always order the Caprese, but their showpiece is the Porchetta. Not long ago someone told me try it (as pork is not my first choice usually), and honestly…i have a new favorite!
Grilled Cheese: it’s a bit of a walk but if you walk along the Rijnkade (next to the Rijn/water) to the Havenmeester you will be rewarded with the best grilled cheese of Arnhem (according to me!). I recommend the Bacon Cheddar! (little warning: they don’t have a toilet!)
Falafel: in my own street you will find the most delicious Falafel place of Arnhem, Mitano. With the fresh ingredients you can make your own wrap. (Also good filled with kebab by the way). Perfect for on the go, while strolling down the cutest street of Arnhem or when the sun shines on their little terrace…and who knows you might see me walking by ;).
Surinam: i just couldn’t choose, so i just mention both of them. Faffie in my own street (Steenstraat) and Tante Roos in Klarendal (Fashion Quater). Especially a Pom sandwich can be recommended at both places!
To do:
Glass elevator: unfortunately, not the glass lift from the childrens book, this elevator belongs to the Eusebius church of Arnhem and not to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. But if you’re are looking for a nice view over the city, this is really the place to be. Go up with the glass elevator, which is an experience by itself as you will pass the clocks and when upstairs you can choose between two glass balconies which makes it possible to see all of Arnhem. You can choose to do an audio tour to find out more about Arnhem, but even without the view is impressive. And do you spot the Disney figurs made on the church during its restauration in 1962? Entrance €11,- (€1,- discount with a museum card) and you can reserve a time online.
Sonsbeekpark: my favorite place to clear my head, to go for a walk but also lovely in the summer to lay down on the big field in front of the White Villa (get something nice in town to eat or bring something yourself for a picnic, and yes, a bbq is also allowed..just make sure to clean up after yourself in “my” park ;)!!). The park also has enough spots to sit on a terrace or go for a coffee to go. And with a little cross over you walk straight into Park Zypendaal, which is a little quieter.
Burger’s Zoo: if animals belong in cages or not is not mine to discuss. What i do find comforting is the Burgers Zoo has protected a huge nature reserve in Belize the last 30 years. And this area has been copied in their Mangrove and honestly, it’s my favorite spot in the Zoo. You feel like you’re on a tropical island, surrounded by hundreds of butterflies and you can find their newest addition, the baby Manatee! But also the Bush, Dessert and Ocean are definetely worth a visit. Entrance: €24,50.
Openlucht museum (Open air musea): hahaa honestly, i used to think this was the most boring day out ever and the only thing that made it a little worthwhile, were the poffertjes and the old-Dutch candy shop. I got a little older and i can appreciate a little more now, especially in the winter with the ice skating ring, the Amsterdam houses, the 70’s hous (oh look, we used to have that lamp, oh and the chair, or those sleepers in the garden ;)!) and yes, also still the Old Dutch Candy store. Entrance €19,50.
Airborne Museum: history lovers are at the right place in Arnhem, as we are afterall known for a bridge too far and everywhere in Arnhem you can find reference to the Second World War. Eventhough the Airborn Musea is in Oosterbeek, it is definetly worth a visit if you want to know more about the battle of Arnhem. And in it’s basement you will get a real experience of how that was like. Entrance: €15,-
Staying for dinner?
FoodVia: do you want to know what goodness can be found in and around Arnhem, you just have to visit FoodVia. They only cook with local products and are a No Food Waste concept. Which means suprising combinations. And how fun, a few times a year you can sit down at the long table with strangers and enjoy a delicious dinner together. Foodvia is all about connecting and that makes it’s a nice place for a healthy “potluck” dinner!
Foodhallen: hahaha this girl was a bit skeptical, Arnhem has to be hip aswell. That badly that even my parents had paid a visit way before i did and were so praising, i just had to take a look. Oh boy, was i wrong, this is really such a cute version of a Foodhall. I’m even a litle proud that we (well obviously not me, but Arnhem residents that get it) has made something so amazing. The interior, the vibe and various foodstands are so nice. When it’s possible again, you just have to visit and you can even go for a little dancing as soon as the kitchens closes. (see photos).
Matsuzaka: there was a meme going round for a while of Oprah “you get a sushi restaurant, and you get a sushirestaurant” about Arnhem and truthfully they did pop up like mushrooms during autumn. But Matsuzaka had been there all the time, far before sushi became trendy. And till today it’s still the best one in Arnhem. No all you can eat concept but delicious fresh homemade sushi, being made right in front of your eyes. And secretly i’m really jealous of their golden wallpaper. Also to go. (the sushi, not the wallpaper ;)…unfortunatly!).
Konijnenvoer: since 2018 this famous (and awardwinning) plantbased restaurant was located in Arnhem untill they closed their doors last year. Shame on me, as i had never been, this was one of the restaurants on my list, but unfortunately…a missed opportunity! Or not? As rumour has it that the owners are looking for a new location of Konijnenvoer 2.0 (or even 3.0). (fun fact: Konijnenvoer means Rabbit food in Dutch). Untill than you can enjoy their To Go/Take out option, Konijnenvoer Express and i tried these before putting this blog online (as in, literally, last night!). Conclusion: YES YOU WANT THIS!!! Vegan has never tasted this good!
Locals: unfortunatly it opened just when our Prime Minister decided to close everything again, so no, i haven’t been able to try it, just like many of the Arnhem residents. But the website looks promising when it comes to interior and the menu. They follow the 80/20 principle so veggies are in the spotlight and those veggies grow in the restaurant itself. But also for meatlovers and fish eaters there’s enough good choices on the menu. And all local. Well i for one am looking forward to a visit!

Hotel Haarhuis: not “on a budget” but very good and central. Step from the train right into your room…as it’s this close to the gorgeous Central Station (which is by the way also very Insta worthy). And you will find some of the above mentioned cute spot in one building: restaurant Locals and coffee place Hoek is part of Hotel Haarhuis and they also have an amazing rooftopbar, Blou, with a gorgeous view over the city. Oh and don’t forget to check the award winning toilet of the bar ;)!
Hotel ModeZ: Love fashion & design? You “must” stay the night at this hotel, with rooms designed by a.o. Bas Kosters and The People of the Labyrinths, located in the middle of the Fashion Quarter. By the way, Caspar, located under the hotel, is a great place to have coffee or a nice lunch. Recommended for foodies: at Studio Lenneke Wispelwey in the Fashion Quarter you will find the most gorgeous tableware!
Landgoed Groot Warnsborn: rather enjoy the peace and quiet of the Veluwe (nature reserve), i can recommend hotel Groot Warnsborn. It’s lovely to walk around the estate, but also the restaurant is very nice.
*because i obviously sleep in my own bed, i do not have much experience with hotels or B&B’s in Arnhem. I do think there are budget friendlier options, as i saw a lot of B&B’s in nice areas of my city, so please google for those.
Snack souvenirs:
Arnhemse Meisjes: sweet and a little salty, this cookie describes a girl from Arnhem perfectly!
Chocolate of Mousset: well known in Arnhem and surroundings and they also sell the Arnhemse Meisjes! But you just can’t leave with their chocolate, there are people (and i don’t mention names) that when they are young didn’t go for less when it came to chocolate letters or Easter bunnies. Oh and if you happen to be in Arnhem after Sinterklaas, line up for Brokkendag, the best No Food Waste concept ever!
Arnhemse Korenmarkt liqueur: for sale at Barrique, THE liqueur store of Arnhem next to the Korenmarkt. They also sell great water pitchers for Ernem’s water by the wine. Oh and also for Arnhems beer or a special (not local) Whiskey you are at the right place!
