Ik ga niet liegen, Assen was het gewoon net niet voor mij. Van alle 12 hoofdsteden was dit wel echt de saaiste en ja, dat is inclusief Lelystad. Gelukkig had ik leuk gezelschap en beauty is where you find it, dus uiteraard zijn er wel wat leuke plekjes te vinden. Aanrader is ook echt de wellness van Van der Valk en als je even helemaal tot rust wil komen dan is dit wel echt de plek. Want behalve de wellness is Assen omringt door prachtige natuur.
Coffee, tea…me? Uh, i mean cake!
Gallery 22: Koffie en kunst, een heerlijke combinatie wat mij betreft. Bij Gallery 22 vind je het allebei en meer. Zo kocht ik er ook prachtige oorbellen en de koffie kan ook to go. Maar dat is eigenlijk zonde, want dit is een heerlijk plekje om even te zitten en te genieten van de fijne sfeer!
Bar Brasserie Pingo in het Drents museum: alleen al deze brasserie is het bezoeken van het museum waard. Prachtig ingericht, fijne menukaart en de Drentse Zwerfkei moet je gewoon proberen. Vraag wel even of ze het op een groter bordje serveren, want knoeien is gegarandeerd met dit schuimgebak ;)!
Leukste Lunchplekjes:
We kregen er eentje getipt, maar eerlijk, dit was een soort grand café wat je eigenlijk in elke grote stad wel kunt vinden. Niks mis mee, maar ook niet zo heel bijzonder. Wel vind je op de Brink (waar je op zaterdag ook de markt kunt vinden) diverse lunchplekjes en heerlijke terrasjes mocht het zonnetje schijnen.
To do:
TT Assen: Assen is eigenlijk het meest bekend om de TT en dat was te merken op de weg naar huis, waar overal (vooral) jongetjes en mannen langs de kant stonden te wachten om foto’s te maken van alle dure auto’s die er tijdens een event waren. Dus hou je van motoren of snelle auto’s dan is circuit in Assen zeker the place to be.
Drents Museum: dit was toch wel het hoogtepunt van ons bezoek (naast de heerlijke wellness van VdV dan), want wat een prachtig museum is dit. Gevestigd in een prachtig oud gebouw maar met een modern gedeelte wat beide heel fijn aanvoelen. Met mooie wisselende tentoonstellingen, maar ook vaste museumstukken. Hier kun je ook het veenmeisje bewonderen. Niet heel fijn, zie foto, maar wel apart hoeveel behouden is en gelukkig is de reconstructie van hoe ze er uit zou hebben gezien een stuk fijner om naar te kijken. Voor kinderen is er ook een leuk interactief gedeelte en je vind er het grootste poppenhuis waar je dus zelf door heen kunt lopen wat best grappig gedaan is.
Van der Veen Warenhuis: al 125 jaar een familiebedrijf en dat merk je. Persoonlijke aandacht, fijn ingericht met shops in shop en een mooi uitzicht over Assen vanaf het rooftop terras.
Natuur: even lekker weg, mobiel uit en genieten van de natuur, dan ben je in Assen wel op je plek. Het Asserbos is erg bekend, en het natuurgebied achter de Van der Valk is ook heerlijk. Liever wat actiever, dan kun je ook mountainbiken door de bossen. En rondom Assen zijn natuurlijk de bekende Hunebedden te bezoeken. Er is zelfs een Hunebedhighay waar je 47 Hunebedden kunt bewonderen, als grote stenen je ding zijn ;)!
Staying for dinner?
Villa Tapas: eerlijk, ik heb bijna moeten smeken om tips maar kreeg deze best wel hele leuke tip last minute van een volgster op Insta. Heel eerlijk, ga je voor een romantisch weekendje weg dan zou ik het niet aanraden, maar ga je met een grote groep vrienden/vriendinnen dan is dit wel echt super. Het all you can eat concept maar dan met tapas had ik nog niet eerder gezien en via de Ipad klik je op de lekkerste gerechtjes, die binnen een paar minuten op je tafel belanden. Fijn is ook dat de porties niet supergroot zijn en er zit altijd iets tussen wat je lust op de hele grote menukaart, van kip tot vis en natuurlijk ook vega gerechtjes. Naast het theater en de bioscoop is dit ook een goede plek om te eten voor de show/film begint.
Eetcafe de Witterbrug: we kregen deze aangeraden en het is een begrip in Assen werd ons verteld. De mega kaassoufle blijkt erg goed te zijn en de spareribs zijn ook favoriet, volgens de tipgeefster. Aangezien ze wat later op de dag open gingen en we nog een eindje moesten rijden en er niet heel veel meer te zien/doen was op zondag in Assen hebben wij ‘m overgeslagen, maar de menukaart online ziet er prima uit! Echt Hollands en very budgetproof!
Voulez vous Coucher:
Van der Valk Assen: nog steeds staat ZuidAs op eerste plek bij mij qua hotels van deze keten. Maar wil je volledig tot rust komen, dan is deze Van der Valk wel echt heel fijn. Prachtige sauna’s, sneeuwdouche en binnenzwembad met uitzicht op het bos. Van de buitenkant heeft dit hotel niet echt uitstraling maar gelukkig veranderd dat als je zodra je de deur door loopt. Achter het hotel is een natuurpark met een groot meer en heel leuk, je vindt er ook de moestuin van het hotel. Dus veel van het eten wat geserveerd wordt in het restaurant wordt dus door hotel zelf verbouwd. Let wel op dat je niet een tussendoor paadje neemt want dan wordt je misschien omver gefietst door mountainbikers ;)!
Snack Souveniers:
Bartje bid niet voor bruine bonen…haahahah Ellen ook niet want ik haat bonen, maar de potjes bruine bonensoep die je kunt krijgen bij de VVV van Assen vond ik dan wel weer heel grappig gedaan. Hier kun je eigenlijk vooral dingen uit de hele provincie vinden maar Assen heeft ook een eigen kruidenlikorette.

I’m not gonna lie, Assen just didn’t do it for me. Of all the 12 main cities this was the most boring one, and yes, that includes Lelystad. Luckly, i had good company and beauty is where you find it, so ofcourse there are some cute places. Definetly recommend the wellness of Van der Vals and if you want some r&r this is the place to be. As except for the wellness, Assen is surrounded by gorgeous nature.

Gallery 22: Coffee and art, an amazing combination if you ask me. At Gallery 22 you can find both and more. I also bought beautiful earrings here and the coffee can also be bought to go. But that’s kinda a shame, as this is such a cozy place to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere!
Bar Brasserie Pingo in the Drents museum: just for this restaurant the museum is worth the visit. Beautiful design, nice menu and the Drentse Zwerfkei you just have to try. Do ask if they can serve it on a bigger plate as you will be spilling it due to the texture ;)!
Fun Lunchplaces:
We did get a tip for a place, but honestly, it was the kind of grand café you can find in almost every big city. Nothing wrong with that, but also not very special. Although you do find at the Brink (where you can also find the market on Saturday) various lunch places and nice terraces when the sun is out.
To do:
TT Assen: Assen is mostly known for the TT and we noticed on our way home. Everywhere there were (mostly) boys and men on the side of the road to take pictures of the expensive cars that were in Assen for an event. So if you love motors and fast cars, the circuite at Assen is definetly the place to be.
Drents Museum: this was defintely the highlight of our visit (besides the delicious wellness of VdV), as this museum is gorgeous. Established in a beautiful old building but with a modern part which both give a good vibe. With amazing expositions that change every few months, but also some museum pieces you can always visit. You can also find the swamp girl here. Not very nice, see photo, but remarkable how much has stayed intaked. And luckly the reconstruction of how she was supposed to look is a lot nicer to see. For children there’s an interactive part and you can find the biggest dollhouse in here where you can walk through and is kinda fun.
Van der Veen department store: a family business for over 125 years and you can till. Personal attention, nicely decorated with shops in shop and beautiful view over Assen on the rooftop terrace.
Nature: need a break, turn of your phone and enjoy the nature, Assen is your place. Het Asserbos is wellknown and the nature area behind Van der Valk is also amazing. Need a little more excitement, you can mountainbike through the woods. And around Assen your can find the wellknown Hunebeds. There’s even a Hunebedhighay where you can see 47 Hunebeds, if big stones are your thing ;)!
Staying for dinner?
Villa Tapas: honestly, i almost had to beg to get dinner tips but this kinda fun tip i got last minute from a sweet follower on Instagram. Very honestly, if you are going for a romantic weekend away, i wouldn’t recommend it, but if you go with a group of friends this is really fun. The all you can eat concept but in a way i hadn’t seen it yet, with tapas. With an Ipad you click on the most delicious dishes which are served to your table in just minutes. Also nice, the portions are not really big and there’s always something you will like on the big menu card, from chicken to fish and ofcourse also vega. Next to the theater which makes it a nice place for a quick bite before the movie/show starts.
Eetcafe de Witterbrug: we got this as recommendation and they said it was the most wellknown place in Assen. The mega cheese soufflé is very good and the spareribs are a favorite, according to the woman giving us the tip. As it opened a bit later on Sunday and we still had a long drive back ahead and there wasn’t much to do/see in Assen we ended up skippping it, but the menu online looks fine! Very Dutch and very budgetproof!
Voulez vous Coucher:
Van der Valk Assen: ZuidAs will always be my number one when it comes to Van der Valk hotels. But if you are going for total relaxation this one is pretty nice. Beautiful sauna’s, snow shower and indoor swimmingpool with view of the woods. From the outside this hotel doesn’t really look appealing, but luckly it changes when you enter through the sliding doors. Behind the hotel there is a naturepark with a big lake and so fun, you can find the veggie garden of the hotel there too. So a lot of the food served in the restaurant in the hotel is actually grown there. Just don’t take a small pad through the woods as you might get hit by a mountainbiker ;)!
Snack Souveniers:
Bartje doesn’t pray for brown beans…haahah Ellen doesn’t either as i hate beans, but the jars of brown bean soup you can buy at VVV Assen did make me laugh. You can find products from all over Drente here but Assen does have it’s on herb liquer.
