12 cities, 13 snaccidents: Den Haag

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean cake!

To do:

Staying for dinner?

Hahaha, the joke was on us, want werkelijk aan alles is gedacht.

English version:

The best of both world, city & beachlife in 1 city…that describes The Hague the best…or like they say so theirselves…oh oh Den Haag, mooie stad achter de duinen (Dutch song about The Hague which translates to Oh oh The Hague, beautiful city behind the dunes). And they are not lying! I haven’t been in The Hague for about 10 years and appearantly i missed the best places, as oh this city is so much fun and decadent…just the way i love it! And a day to the beach couldn’t been missing during this visit with my mum:

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean cake!
Chiqueolatte: first stop after the Escher exposition was Chique o Latte for coffee and a treat. Appearantly this is a chain but i didn’t know it yet. But i will be looking for it from now on, as except for a great interior, the Vanille Chai Latte was very nice and next time i will go for a whole box of Créme Brûlée chocolates instead of one! And yes, we only had Latte & a chocolate, as we still needed to go for lunch but the counter was full of deliciousness, so definetly a good place for cake & coffee!
Mugs & Mermaids: i got tipped about this place multiple times and i get it, very instagramable food and very sweet owners that are happy to let you know what to choose from their menu. And they do an all day breakfast…the pancake stack on the table next to us looked delicious! We shared a Red Velvet Cake and i had the Double Caramel cold Latte.
Pavarotti Dolce: just for this i would drive up to Kijkduin. Everything works, the interior, the outfits of the personnel, the toppings and yes, the icecream is also really delicious! Creamy and lots of delicious flavours. I say: go for it! Oh and also a perfect place to see the sun set which is definetly nog a sad sight ;)! (Dutch saying)

Best lunch spots:
Lodewieck: we were looking for a nice place to eat and this cozy place and menu spoke to us. And guess what, it’s the oldest lunch room on the Denneweg. And in all these years they haven’t change the interior, which gives it a warm livingroom vibe. And when guest come in and the waitress know their coffee orders, you know people feel right at home here. Oh and than the food, i had the thin sliced raw tuna salad and mum the sweet goatcheese and both were delicious! Litte disclaimer: if you want to visit this nice place, be quick, as half july it will close and get taken over by a new owner, who probably makes it a nice place aswell. But the street is worth a visit aswell!
Strandtent 14: waking up with the sound of the sea, feet in the sand and sun on your face…can life get any better? Yes, with breakfast at Strandtent 14. As they serve it all day long…i can recommend the Pancakes witj blueberrie cream! And yes, you can also lunch and have diner here!
Beachclub Wow: recommended by the sweet waitress at Habana (see diner), and she didn’t lie, this is truly WOW. The interior, the food and the personnel. And oh, the sofa beds…next time i will make reservations and lay there untill sunset. What an amazing place!
Lusso: on of my followers told me they have the best Italian sandwiches in The Hague, now i haven’t tried them all, but i surely take her word for it. Especially after eating their Vitello Tonato sandwich. The owners are Italians and with a counter full of fresh produce, you know you are here for a great lunch. Oh and have the Lemon Soda for drinks…it’s good!

To do:
Escher in het Paleis: i had this in mind when planning my trip but when i got it as tip from one of my sweet followers, i knew for sure. And not just the exposition of Escher is worth the visit, the palace in which Queen Emma lived also. What a beautiful place and that in combination with the art of Escher makes it a real Must Do. Little tip: you have to put your bags in a safe, just make sure to bring your creditcard/bankcard, as at the end of the exposition you can have a cute photo taken but they only accept cards, no cash (€5 for a hardcopy and you get an code to download it).
Strand: eventhough Scheveningen gets all the credits, i personally think it’s too crowded and touristy (but did take a peek as i have a lot of youth memories here). But Kijkduin is more my style and i got a tip to go to the Zwarte Pad…it’s a little further in Scheveningen (pass the Kurhaus) and find a parkingplace on top and a way to the beach were it’s a lot quieter but with cute beach clus, just like Kijkduin.
Maurits huis: I can’t leave The Netherlands with seeing 1 of the most famous paintings of Vermeer in real life. But honestly, there was so much more beautiful art to admire and i just love the combination of modern and old masters. And this is also a gorgeous building inside and out. After it, you can visit the Binnenhof and little tower (where our government is situated) as it’s right next to it.
Het Rariteiten Kabinet: a musea where you don’t need to pay to enter and everything is for sale, that’s the Rariteiten Kabinet. A few doors down from Mugs & Mermaids i got attracted by the horns outside that i just had to take a peek inside and glad i did. What an amazing collections of taxidermy/mounted animals (from tigers to cats and Cucaburra’s to parakeets), fossils, seashells and more curiosities can be found in this Cabinet of rarities. If you are in the neighboorhood, you definetly must go and have a look for yourself!
Rooftop Het Dak Bleyenberg: hahah there’s probability a church tower you can climb in The Hague, but i haven’t even bothered to look it up this time. Instead our sweet hostess of our B&B told us to have a drink at Bleyenberg in the city. From here you have a great view over old The Hague! And a nice place to relax after shopping (talking about shopping, don’t forget to visit the Passage).

Staying for dinner?
Habana Beach: there are so many cute beach clubs in Kijkduin and Habana is definetly worth a visit for dinner. We choose their delicious Famous Fish Platter and i get why it’s famous is…so yummie and fun. Also for a wine at the fireplace you are at the right place here. And our sweet waitress, Kelly, gave us the best tips like Wow and Jamey Bennett which we really had to visit, and she is right, as these are definetly nice place. But don’t skip Kijkduin, as it might nog be as well known, go and judge for yourself, and i pretty sure you will visit it more often, even if it’s just for Habana. And if so, say hi to Kelly from me!
Palmette: as i didn’t get that much tips for restaurants in The Hague i decided to go on a little investigation myself. And I really love Instagram for this, as after typing in The Hague i just went through all the photos that had amazing food…and 3 guesses which restaurant posted the best pictures..yes, Palmette. And not just the pictures are amazing in real life the plates look even better adn the flavours are amazing. Really i could sit here all night and try out every dish on the menu (only problem when doing these blogs is that you are already eating all day long, so there was only space for 2 dishes and delicious fries with truffle mayo) but the two dishes i tried were sooo good. I started with the ceviche, mum with the bisque and as a main i went for the steak tartare, while mum enjoyed thin sliced veal. Normally we try eachother dishes, but it was so good, we ate it all before we had a change (and secretly i didn’t wanna give up even a tiny bite of my own choice). We enjoyed everything on their terrace in the sun but the interior is so fun that it’s not a punishment to have to sit inside. And oh, did i forget to mention how sweet the personnel is also at this place. I don’t know but somehow people keep saying how rude personnel is in the west of the Netherlands, but that’s absolutely not a problem in The Hague! I really hope i get the chance to go to The Hague one more time before i leave, as Palmette really stole my foodie heart!
Jamey Bennett: a few doors down from Palmette this is definetly not a punishment either to have a bite. Tipped by, yup, Kelly (thanks girl), and yet again she’s right. However, we were now very, very full and i was so humid that i really wasn’t in the mood to eat. So mum took a salad and i went for a Tuna Pizza. Which wasn’t a pizza by the way, but it’s being served on a very thin filo pastry, so a nice & light dish which is perfect during a hot summers’day and we had a delicious mocktail to cool down with it. A nice ending to 3 delicous days in The Hague!
Foodhall Scheveningen en Foodhallen Den Haag: Honestly, normally i love Foodhalls, i love the vibe and different stalls, but at both places it was so quiet and no energy at all, so we decided to go for dinner at better places. Maybe it was the heat or that we were there on a weekday as it sure wasn’t the interior or offering. Fun if you are with a group of people who all have a different taste in food. And i bet it’s more lively in the weekend. The one in The Hague is situated in a nice little square, called Haagse Bluf.

Voulez vous coucher:
NH Kijkduin: the biggest advantage of these unpaid blogs, is that i get to be very, very honest. And in this case, sorry NH, what an dump. Worn-out carpet, spots on the walls, retro wellness (and no, not the kind of retro that makes you happy) and elevators which doors hardly close and make you wonder if you are going to make it to your floor eventually. What makes all of this right..the location!! As oh how lovely is it to are almost situated on the beach and see the sea from your cute balcony (also a plus). And yes, it’s nice that there is a gym and even with the retro deco, the pool and sauna were nice & relaxing! Oh and the best icecream place of Kijkduin is right across the street…also a plus! Maybe i’m a little spoiled as when it comes to chain hotels i am a big fan of Van der Valk in the Netherlands and secretely i am comparing. But if you are looking for a okay-ish hotel close to the beach and Kijkduin is really fun, i could recommend it…just don’t have any high expectations after looking at the photos on the site or when you enter the lobby!
B&B Veen 107: a whole different story Bed & Breakfast Veen 107 just outside the city center of The Hague (10 minutes by car). Mum really wanted to stay at a bed and breakfast once in her life, but dad is not into it (and honestly i prefer hotels aswell), so my mum got to choose the B&B. She watched the program on Max tv and i secretly do too if there’s nothing else on (guilty pleasure), so we were already making jokes of how we were going to whine about missing hooks for jackets or low hanging beams you can bump your head on. Hahaha, the joke was on us, as they literally thought of everything. You have your own appartment with a private entrance where you can walk into the beautiful garden in the morning, and being greeted by the cutest dog and sweet hostess, which is willing to give you the best tips (she also has a portfolio with the best places in the area). The interior is so gorgeous, nothing is missing and the beams give such a beautiful effectt (and no you don’t bump your head). I was mostly impressed by the wooden ventilator above the bed and made a quick picture of the fragance sticks in the seperate toilet (also very nice). A filled fridge (with wine, beer and delicious juice) and some snacks can be found in the cute little kitchen. After a delicous sleep and shower, we were surprised in the morning at the breakfast table (a seperate door in your appartment leads you to the house of the hostess and her husband) with a delicious breakfas with a personal touch of homemade South African biscuits. If i ate more that day than normally…hahaha maybe, but how nice it that every once in a while your breakfast is already mad and there’s so much choice. If you consider going to The Hague for the weekend/a few days after reading this blog with a friend or your mum, i definetly recommend this place. I, for one, are a fan! y
The Collecter: i haven’t stayed here myself so i can’t give a review about the rooms or facilities, but on our way to the foodhalls this cute little boutique hotel in the middle of the center caught my eye. The lobby is promising, so if your are looking for a hotel in the City Center of The Hague, this looks like a cute place!

Snack souvenirs:
Haagse Hopjes, Haagse Bluf, Haags bakkie…hahaha the people in The Hague atleast have a lot of food named after them ;)! Oh and then there’s the The Hague kakker (dandy), believe me, they have enough of those, but in this case it’s a flat raisin bread. Oh and the opposite is called the Haagse Poffah, almost the same but yet different. Now as a foodie i get sent products on a regular base and when i walked into The Hague’s Finest i found out a lot of those products are from The Hague, from the Wholey pasta and Mi-tsu-ba (Japanese salted crackers) and beauty products of Naïf. But a lot more, so if your are looking for something really the Hagues in your bathroom, livingroom, kitchen and that beer on your balcony after a long day, this is the place to be! Oh and they are going to open their own Liquor Store soon with only drinks made in The Hague.
