Oh je verhuisd naar Argentinië?!? Ja snap ik wel met dit weer! Een van de vele reacties die ik kreeg toen ik vertelde dat ik ging emigreren. Helaas, helaas, Buenos Aires ligt in het zuiden van Zuid-Amerika en heeft dus gewoon seizoenen, alleen andersom. Zo is het hier nu lente, alleen is het deze week hetzelfde herfstachtige weer als in Nederland. Als local is dat niet zo erg, je kruipt gewoon lekker op de bank met een mate en alfajores en binged een Spaanse serie weg (aanrader: Pacto de Silentio op Netflix). Maar ben je maar een paar daagjes als tourist in Buenos Aires dan baal je natuurlijk. Maar met deze 5 tips worden zelfs rainy days buenos dias:
El Ateneo Grand Splendid boekenwinkel
Nu zijn boekwinkels sowieso een heerlijk tijdverdrijf op een regenachtige dag, deze boekwinkel maakt het nog net wat aangenamer. Ook wel de mooiste boekwinkel in de wereld genoemd, deze boekwinkel is gevestigd in een oud theater en behalve de stoelen die vervangen zijn door boekenkasten en er op het podium nu geluncht kan worden, is de rest zo goed als hetzelfde gebleven. Je kijkt je ogen uit als je het prachtige plafond ziet, het houtsnijwerk, de mooie balkons. Op zoek naar een goed boek is geen probleem als je Spaans kan, helaas is de engelse sectie heel klein en niet zo inspirerend. Maar alleen al de architectuur van deze boekwinkel is een bezoekje waard en geniet van een heerlijke submarino (warme chocolade melk met echte chocolade), mate of latte met iets lekkers op het prachtige podium voor La Merienda of kom iets eerder voor een lunch op een unieke locatie.
La Boca stadion
Voetbalfans kunnen hun hart ophalen in het La Boca stadion want behalve stadion is er ook een heus museum in gevestigd. Een plek waar de de bekendste nummer 10 heeft gespeeld en het er regelmatig gepassioneerd aan toe gaat, vooral tijdens een duel tussen La Boca en River Plate (die overigens ook een museum hebben).
De bombonera (de liefkozende bijnaam van het stadion) is sowieso een bezoekje waard, ook als je geen voetballiefhebber bent. Voetbal is net zo Argentijns als biefstuk en een cultuur op zichzelf. Daarnaast is het ook nog eens gelegen in de kleurrijke wijk, La Boca, dus goed te combineren.
Galerías Pacifico
Shop till you drop maar dan wel lekker droog en in 1 van de mooiste winkelcentra in Buenos Aires. Van de mooiste winkels tot een kunst galerie op de bovenste verdieping en van de fontein op de begane vloer tot de prachtige plafondschilderingen, dit is shoppen in stijl. Of gewoon lekker windowshoppen want hier zijn de wat duurdere Argentijnse merken gevestigd (al zijn deze met de blue dollar koers ook nog betaalbaar). Honger gekregen, dan kun je heerlijk lunchen bij 1 van de vele restaurantjes in de foodcourt en als je naast de fontein een plekje vind is het net of je op een pleintje in Italië bevindt.
Teatro Colon
Ook zonder kaartjes te hebben voor een voorstelling is dit prachtige theater een Must See op je lijstje en een nat, grijs dagje is dan het perfecte moment. De akoestiek van Teatro Colon is de beste in de wereld en de beste opera zangers hebben hier het podium beklommen. Maar niet alleen dat maakt Teatro Colon bijzonder. Drie architecten hebben aan het gebouw gewerkt, het marmer is speciaal vanuit Europa gekomen, de vloeren, houtsnijwerk en plafonds zijn prachtig en de beelden en kroonluchters maken het af. Het is net een paleis. Elke dag zijn er tours, om de 15 minuten in het Spaans en op vaste tijdstippen in het Engels. Net te laat voor een tour, geen probleem, ook hier kun je wachten met een koffietje en natuurlijk iets zoets!
Mercado de las Pulgas
San Telmo market op zondag is ook geweldig maar als het regent is dit een perfect alternatief. De overdekte markt is de grootste in Buenos Aires. Ik raak hier dan ook altijd de weg kwijt, want er is zoveel moois te zien, een waar doolhof voor schatzoekers. Van meubels tot elpees en schilderijen tot prachtige kristallen glazen, het zijn misschien iets te grote souveniertjes om mee naar huis te nemen maar even heerlijk rondsnuffelen is ook leuk. En na afloop een ijsje eten bij Heladería Scannapieco is een aanrader. Liever iets gezonders, 1 van mijn favoriete lunchplekjes, Gratitude is schuin tegenover te vinden en je kunt gelijk even ernaast een foto maken met de metershoge Frida Kahlo muurschildering als het eventjes droog is.

Oh you are moving to Argentina?!? yeah i get it with this Dutch weather! One of the many reactions i got when i told someone i was emigrating. But too bad, Buenos Aires is in the south of South America and does have seasons, just the other way around. At this moment it’s spring, although this week it’s the same autumn type of weather as in The Netherlands. As a local that’s not that bad, you just cozy up on the couch with mate and alfajores and bing watch a Spanish series (I recommend: Pacto de Silentio on Netflix). But if you are only a few days in Buenos Aires as a tourist it really sucks. But with these 5 tips even rainy days turn into buenos dias:
El Ateneo Grand Splendid boekenwinkel
Bookstores are always a great way to pass time on rainy days, but this store makes it even better. Also known as the most gorgeous bookstore in the world, this bookstore used to be an old theatre and except the seats that have been replaced by bookshelves and the fact that you can lunch on the stage, the rest pretty much remained the same. You will be in awe when you see the gorgeous ceiling, the woodwork, the beautiful balconies. Looking for a good book is no problem if you are Spanish, unfortunately the English section is very small and not that inspiring. But just the architecture alone is worth the visit and enjoy a delicious submarino (hot chocolate with real chocolate), mate or latte on the gorgeous stage for La Merienda or come a bit early for lunch on a unique location.
La Boca stadium
Soccer fans will be delighted the find that La Boca stadium is not just a stadium, it also is a real musea. The place where the most famous no. 10 has played and where at times it’s one passioned game especially when it’s a dual between La Boca and River Plate (which by the way also has a Museo).
River Plate (die overigens ook een museum hebben).
The bombonera (the nickname of the stadium) is definitely worth a visit, even if you are not a hardcore soccer fan. Soccer is just as Argentine as steak and a whole culture by itself. Besides that, it’s situated in the colorful neighborhood, La Boca, so perfect to combine.
Galerías Pacifico
Shop till you drop but nice and dry in one of the most gorgeous malls in Buenos Aires. From the most beautiful stores to the art gallery on the top floor and from the fountain on the lower floor to the gorgeous painted ceiling, this is shopping in style. Or just window shopping as some of the more expensive brands of Argentine are having their shops here (but they are still affordable with the blue dollar). Hungry, than you can find a delicious lunch at one of the many restaurants in the foodcourt and if you find a spot next to the fountain it will feel like you are on a square in Italy.
Teatro Colon
Even if you don’t have tickets for a show, this theatre is a Must See on you list and one a wet, gray day the perfect moment to visit. The acoustics of Teatro Colon is the best in the work and the best opera singers have climbed the stage here. But not only that makes the theatre so special. Three architects have worked on the building, the marble came especially from Europe, the floor, the woodwork and ceilings are absolutely gorgeous and the statues and chandeliers are the finishing touches. It’s like a palace. Every day there are tours, every 15 minutes in Spanish and on set times in English. Missed a tour, no worries, you can wait at the restaurant with a coffee and ofcourse something sweet!
Mercado de las Pulgas
San Telmo market on Sundays are great but if it’s raining this is the perfect alternative. The indoor market its the biggest in Buenos Aires. I always get lost in it as there is so much to see, a true labyrinth for treasure hunters. From furniture to vinyl and paintings to gorgeous cristal glasses, it might be to big of a souvenir to bring home but just looking around is also fun. And getting an ice cream afterwards at Heladería Scannapieco is recommended. Rather go for something more healthy, one of my favorite lunch places, Gratitude is across it and you can snap you photo with the meters high painting of Frida Kahlo next to it if it’s dry for a bit.
