Veggieworld: Viva Las Vega’s

English version:

Since i started my meatless challenge* i’ve noticed that my timeline on Instagram is showing more and more vegetarian or vegan dishes. More and more people are making a conscious choice to eat meatless. And yes i also read that these people (and myself after mentioning i’m doing a meatless challenge) get the question: “but what do you eat?”. So when i saw a commercial for Veggieworld (8 & 9 april in London and today & tomorrow in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, The Netherlands) i thought…lets find out!

And so i went to Utrecht today with my mum. My mum who joked, should i wear my woolly socks? was surprised mostly by the age of the visitors of this fair. Yep mam, being vegetarian or vegan is no longer frowned upon, actually it’s getting really populair. And that was noticable…it was so busy we couldn’t even get through the first aisles. Well, guess we first have to get a delicious vega waffle ;)!

Yep that doesn’t look bad, does it! After this delicious start of the day we decided to face the crowd to look at the booths. Most of the booths were aimed at Vegan food but there were also companies offering vegan vacations, sold clothes and ofcourse our Dutch Politican party for the animals was present too!

Curious to try everything new we did a lot of tasting. The Vegetarische Slager (dutch brand which means vegetarian butcher) had a newby, paté & filet American and i have to be honest, these were so tasty. Especially the pate tasted really like the real deal. And i would definetly buy both products when they hit the supermarkets. Unfortunately i can’t say that about vegan cheese, that was a bit of a dissapointment esspecially since i’ve been eating a lot more of it now during my no meat challenge. And the candybars made from nuts and dates. like Nakd, are not something i would buy and a lot of booths were offering similiar products with those ingredients. But luckly there were enough other delicious things to try and so there’s no excuse not to switch these snacks for your regular snacks every once in a while!

After the first big crowd started spreading we noticed that the fair wasn’t as big as we thought, esspecially with so many visitors. Ofcourse there are lectures and cooking demo’s on the program but to be honest i’m not really a person to sit down for something like that. Especially since seeing the first title of a lecture in the program book kinda gave me, well uh, the jitters. “Understanding meateaters and convince them”…sounds a little too much like a cult/food in the door to me. Yes i am a meat eater and i do understand how badly animals are treated in the bio industry and yes i do know that my excuse “but i like it!” is very weak. But to start to convert meateaters is taking it a bit too far. Just like you don’t have to tell smokers that it’s bad, i think the step to change your life is up to yourself. And no matter how many sad stories you tell or tell them how bad it is for your body, a person should really wanna make that choice by itself. (and believe me, as ex smoker, i know this all to well). If this was the point of the lecture? i don’t know as we were too late anyway, but you can find out by yourself. (this lecture will be given tomorrow at 16.00 hours).

Curious about the fair? Tomorrow it’s from 10.00 to 18.00 in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht and on April 8 & 9, 2017 in London. Worthwhile: yes but a little too small so maybe in combination with a shoppingtrip, unless you attend all the lectures and cooking demo’s as that is a well filled program. Price online €6,- and €8,- at the event.

What to eat:
At Ramenas we had a delicious sandwich Happy chicken (ofcourse without chicken). At Sharp Sharp food a delicous Shortbread caramel. Ofcourse that delicious waffle from the previous picture of WafflesVeg and unfortunately i was full after that or else i would have definetly tried the donuts (forgot the name of the company) or the delicious smelling food at Veggiebites (the colloured balls and the Suriname/hindoestanic dishes at previous pictures)!

Oh and i can now answer the following question: What do you eat when you don’t eat meat? well: A LOT!!!!! And by the way, also very delicious! When doubted, drag the question asker to next years  VeggieWorld (10 & 11 march 2018). And who knows…i might go totally Vegan during next years No Meat challenge!

Extra tip: At the Frietwinkel in Utrecht they sell vegan mayo and such a delicious fries!!! (Vinkenburgstraat 10, Utrecht)…definetly worth the trip, even if you are not Vegan!

(*for those of your who don’t follow me on Instagram or missed my announcement, every year during lent i do a meatless challenge, which means that for 46 days till Easter i don’t eat meat or fish. Not from a religious point of view, but the thoughts behind Lent is something i do value. For me it’s to appreciate the luxerious life i get to live and besides that, to get a little more creative with veggies).
